Council upgrades Ararat’s bike paths
COUNCIL has ticked off another major project aimed at upgrading local infrastructure and improving overall health and wellbeing in the community. Significant upgrades to Ararat’s bike paths have now been completed, expanding the local bicycle network by nearly 10km.
The works include new and upgraded pathways along Elizabeth, Queen, Gordon, Wilson, Lowe, Grano, and Blake streets.
This project was driven by Council’s Ararat on the Move strategy, which focuses on providing opportunities that promote walking and bike riding as a safe, accessible and beneficial mode of transportation.
This project also aligns with key objectives under Council’s Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan by upgrading and developing safe, accessible and welcoming recreational and community facilities to ensure that community health and wellbeing needs are met into the future.
This project was supported by $266,000 received from the Federal Government’s Active Transport Fund, and a $133,000 contribution from Ararat Rural City Council.
The Active Transport Fund seeks to encourage an increase in active transport through the upgrade of existing and construction of new bicycle and walking pathways across Australia.
"We want to encourage everyone in the community to get moving, and this project is a big part of that," said Ararat Rural City Council Mayor Bob Sanders.
"These new pathways will make it much easier and safer for both residents and visitors to get around in Ararat. We’ve also made sure to link up our sporting hubs, including Gordon Street Recreation Reserve and Alexander Oval, which will benefit our local sports clubs.”
