Volunteer numbers boosted at Avoca Salvos
WITH many volunteer groups across the region still suffering from low membership numbers, Avoca Salvos might be the exception. An increase in volunteers has allowed the Salvos Op Shop to expand its opening hours, easing the workload on its dedicated team while improving service for customers.
Volunteer Marilyn Kip said the store had faced significant staffing challenges over the past year, prompting a community call-out for help.
"Initially we were very low on volunteers, so we only operated Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” she said.
"We desperately needed staff otherwise we'd close on a Friday."
With only a handful of volunteers, keeping up with donations became increasingly difficult.
"Previously we were so undermanned, and we would get 10 to 15 bags and boxes in one go," Ms Kip said.
"It was difficult to plough through that rather than reorganise, tidy and label, we just didn't have time."
After promoting volunteer opportunities through the Pyrenees Advocate and Facebook, the response from the community exceeded expectations.
"I started advertising and the result of that, we are now open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 3pm and we've also started on a Saturday from 10am till 1pm," she said.
"Ultimately our goal has been to have three people on each shift. We've really been proactive," she said. "We've had a lot of positivity and comments from customers."
The volunteer team has grown into a team of passionate locals eager to help the community.
"The reality is we've got enough people at the moment that are all positive and they all have their little niche.
"One lady, she loves linen. I couldn't think of anything worse, but then she goes in and she completely reorganises it and labels things. Another person is really into bric-a-brac. It is all a collaboration."
While the shop is now in a much stronger position, the team is still keen to welcome more volunteers.
"It would be beneficial if we could (gain another)," Ms Kip said.
"Come into the store, then we can chat."
For Ms Kip, the friendships formed through volunteering are just as rewarding as the work itself.
"It's a real community effort. We actually have fun. We are very grateful for that."
