Celebrating many cultures
HUNDREDS of local residents came together recently at the Stawell Town Hall for a celebration of our multicultural community. The third annual Grampians Harmony Festival brought to Stawell the colour and flavours of dozens of countries including China, Nigeria, the Phillipines, Thailand and Tonga.
The festival, now in its third year, is run by the Grampians Multicultural Hub as a way of showcasing the many international communities now living and working in the Stawell region.
Cr Jenny Greenberger welcomed visitors to the festival on behalf of council saying people from around the world are what makes the region such a great place.
“It is wonderful to see so many people here today – families, friends, neighbours, visitors, and community groups – all coming together to share in what makes this region such a great place to live.
“Northern Grampians Shire is home to people from many different cultures and backgrounds. Each brings their own traditions, skills, stories and ideas, and together they make our community stronger, richer and more connected. That diversity is something we value and today is a great example of what happens when we take the time to come together and celebrate it,” she said.
People attending the festival were treated to a variety of traditional performances and dances by people wearing their individual national dress.
There was also a big variety of foods from around the world for people to enjoy and share.
Cr Greenberger said Northern Grampians Shire Council is committed to making sure that everyone feels welcome and included.
“That commitment is reflected in our Multicultural Action Plan, which was shaped by strong community input. This plan sets out practical actions to strengthen connections, reduce barriers and create more opportunities across the municipality.
“With the Grampians Multicultural Festival now in its third year and continuing to grow thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Grampians Multicultural Hub and its strong connections with the community.
“I would like to acknowledge and thank the Grampians Multicultural Hub for delivering this vibrant, community led event once again,” Cr Greenberger said.
